Best Time to Visit Beijing

Beijing's weather varies dramatically by season. Here's what to expect and when to plan your trip.

Spring (March - May)

The best season overall. Daytime temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F-77°F), with cool nights around 5°C-10°C. March can bring occasional sandstorms from the Gobi Desert - check air quality forecasts and pack a scarf. By April, cherry blossoms and magnolias bloom across the city, and the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and Summer Palace are at their most photogenic.

April and May are peak tourist season, especially around the Qingming Festival (early April) and Labor Day holiday (May 1-5). Book Forbidden City tickets at least a week in advance during these months. Hotel prices rise 30-50% above winter rates.

Best for: Palace and garden visits, outdoor photography, comfortable walking. Avoid: First week of May if you dislike crowds.

Summer (June - August)

Hot, humid, and rainy. Temperatures regularly reach 35°C-40°C (95°F-104°F) with humidity above 70%. July and August are Beijing's rainy months - expect sudden afternoon thunderstorms. This is also the school holiday season, so domestic tourist crowds peak alongside the heat.

Strategy for summer: visit indoor attractions like the National Museum and Lama Temple during the midday heat, save outdoor sights for early morning or late afternoon. The Summer Palace has lakeside breezes that make it tolerable even on hot days. Start outdoor excursions by 7am if possible.

Best for: Museums, temple visits, Summer Palace lake views. Avoid: The Great Wall at midday - the stone radiates heat and there's almost no shade.

Autumn (September - November)

Arguably the most beautiful season. Crisp air, clear deep-blue skies, and golden ginkgo foliage make September through early November a photographer's dream. Temperatures are a comfortable 10°C-20°C (50°F-68°F) with low humidity. September and late October through November are the sweet spots.

Warning about October: The first week of October is National Day (Golden Week). This is China's busiest travel period of the year. Attractions are packed, hotels double in price, and train tickets sell out. The weather is perfect but the experience is not. If you're traveling in October, aim for the second half of the month.

Best for: The Great Wall (golden foliage, perfect hiking weather), Forbidden City, outdoor everything. Avoid: October 1-7.

Winter (December - February)

Cold, dry, and surprisingly rewarding. Temperatures range from -10°C to 5°C (14°F-41°F). Snowfall is rare (Beijing averages 2-3 snowy days per winter), but when it comes, the Forbidden City under a dusting of snow is genuinely magical. The advantage of winter: tourist numbers drop to roughly a third of peak-season levels, hotels are 30-50% cheaper, and the low winter sun creates beautiful light for photography.

Beware Chinese New Year: The dates shift each year (late January to mid-February). This is the world's largest human migration - domestic travel surges and many attractions and restaurants close or operate on reduced hours. Avoid the 3 days before through 5 days after New Year's Day unless you specifically want the festival atmosphere.

Best for: Budget travelers, crowd-free Great Wall, snow at the Forbidden City. Avoid: Chinese New Year travel period.
